The Judge Judith Kaye Project at The Family Center

For 2021-2022, JALBCA awarded a $115,000 grant to support The Judge Judith Kaye Project at The Family Center’s Legal Wellness Institute.

Founded in 2008, The Judge Judith Kaye Project at The Family Center provides holistic legal to NYC breast cancer patients and survivors with limited financial and social resources. Many Project clients face the challenges that accompany breast cancer almost entirely alone. Others are trying to balance care for disabled adult children, spouses, or aging parents while managing their own health crisis.

Legal services provided through the Judge Judith Kaye Project focus on needs that impact mental and physical health and stability: access to health care and income; stable and appropriate housing; and a secure family situation and plan for the future. Research shows that financial and other stress can make it difficult for women to adhere to treatment. The Judge Judith Kaye Project helps keep breast cancer patients and survivors stable and with access to the fundamentals of life, so that they can minimize their stress and focus on taking care of themselves. In addition to providing vital legal assistance, the Judge Judith Kaye Project connects clients with a variety of social services and supports.
